Seismic Electrical Cabinets: Ensuring Operational Continuity with Zanardo

When designing facilities in seismic-prone areas, structural engineering naturally focuses on the building itself, such as: hospitals, data centers, power plants, and utility networks. However, securing the building is not enough. In the case of a tremor, the internal control systems fail, the entire operation grinds to a halt.

During an earthquake, electrical enclosures face extreme accelerations and mechanical stresses. Standard enclosures can deform, tear free from their anchors, or collapse entirely. When this happens, the risk is to destroy PLCs components, damaged inverters, power outages, and high risks of electrical fires.

To meet these high-stress environments, Zanardo S.p.A developed the DRC EARTHQUAKE - PROOF KIT.

This system, engineered specifically for our DRC Modular Enclosure Series, converts standard modular cabinets into heavy-duty, earthquake-resistant cabinets. In addition, it is capable of dissipating severe dynamic forces.

Equipped with our reinforcement kits, Zanard’s DRC enclosure underwent rigorous full-scale shaking table tests at the accredited CESI - LPS laboratory.

Following positive results, the system received full compliance with IEEE Std 693 at the "High Performance level, certifying our enclosures for deployment in high-risk seismic zones (Zone 1 through Zone 4).

Which kit works the best based on internal load: 

An enclosure's dynamic behavior changes drastically depending on the weight packed inside it. Proper seismic design requires precise load management, which is why we offer three distinct reinforcement configurations

Structural Requirements for CESI Compliance

In order to maintain CESI-certified structural performance, the DRC cabinets must be assembled by following these strict core technical requirements:

  • High-gauge galvanized steel elements with reinforced corner structures.
  • Multi-hinge door assemblies to secure the locking mechanism under dynamic movement.
  • Front-loading mounting plates for maximum enclosure rigidity.
  • Heavy-duty plinth bases (available in painted or stainless steel).
